Translating Your Driving Licence for the UK

When you need a translation

If your driving licence is not in English, you may need a certified translation to drive legally in the UK or to exchange your licence for a UK one. Visitors can usually drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 12 months, but a translation makes things much smoother if you are stopped or need to hire a car.

For exchanging a non-UK licence through the DVLA, a certified translation of the licence is often required as part of the application.

What the translation should include

A proper certified translation of a driving licence reproduces all the information on the card — including categories, dates, restrictions and the issuing authority — along with the certification statement confirming accuracy.

How long does it take?

A driving licence is a short document, so turnaround is fast. At Globridge we can usually deliver a certified driving licence translation within 24 hours, and same-day where needed. You'll receive a signed, stamped digital copy ready to submit.
